Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite When Traveling

International Travel Brings Resurgence of the Parasites in Hotels

Bed bugs are being found in hotels, as well as dorm rooms, nursing homes, and hotels. Look for the pests on mattresses or in the seams of upholstered furniture.

Not just for fleabag motels and slummy areas, bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are now being found in many U.S. hotels, hospitals, nursing homes, and dormitories. The resurgence of the little blood sucking parasites can be contributed to a number of factors, including the popularity of international travel, immigration, and changes in the chemicals being manufactured.

What are Bed Bugs and How Can They Be Found?

Bed bugs are half an inch in length and appear reddish brown. They are found easiest in the early morning hours, which is when they feed. After a feeding, they can grow larger and appear more red.

During the day, the bugs remain hidden in dark areas, staying out of sight but close to where people sleep at night. Hiding spots can include inside mattress cracks and crevices, in the seams of upholstered furniture, in the backs of headboards or joints of wooden bed frames, or behind loosened wallpaper or picture frames. The bugs often emerge before dawn, when they feed on human blood.

To check hotel beds for bed bugs, look for tiny black specks, which are excrement, or small spots of blood on the sheets. If evidence of bed bugs is found, ask to switch rooms- preferably to one in another wing of the building or farther from the original room.

Are Bed Bugs Harmful to Humans?

Bed bugs generally do not produce a reaction in most people. In addition, there is little evidence to suggest that they can transmit any diseases. Reactions can include small, itchy pink bumps that resemble mosquito bites. For those highly sensitive to bed bugs, reactions may include intensely itchy spots, which, when scratched, can become infected. Extreme reactions can include hives, asthma and even anaphylaxis.

Most bed bug bites can be treated with topical anti-itch lotions or ointments. If a bite becomes infected, see your doctor for a prescription ointment or antibiotic.

Why Are Bed Bugs Making a Comeback in the United States?

Bed bugs are making a comeback for many reasons. The increase of international travel, immigration, and the eradication of certain chemicals have allowed bed bugs to reproduce. The EPA, due to environmental and health concerns, stopped the manufacture of many of the chemicals that were most effective in getting rid of the bugs from the United States, such as DDT. Now, pesticide formulations are less effective on bed bugs, allowing the population to increase.

How Can Bed Bugs Be Prevented or Eradicated?

Business travelers can help to avoid bed bugs by not placing luggage or fabrics on upholstered surfaces. Instead, place suitcases on hard tables or other elevated surfaces. Bed bugs are becoming more prevalent for many reasons. Business travelers can avoid bed bugs by checking upholstered furniture and mattresses, and keeping belongings off the floor.
